self-esteemThere are many reasons that people develop low self-esteem.  Some of the time low self-esteem is directly related to more serious psychological issues; other times it may simply be a reflection of the way one's life is going.  Determining the cause of the self-esteem issues can be the most effective way to start correcting the problem - identification leads to treatment which usually leads to a recovery.

Poor self-esteem often stems from childhood or most commonly from the awkward teenage years.  The emotions we feel when we are in this complicated stage of growing into an adult are confusing and often overwhelming, and some people respond by withdrawing into themselves or turning to harmful practices such as excessive drinking or the use of drugs.  Unfortunately some of these patterns of behaviour can prove particularly difficult to get out of, especially if you are relying on some form of addiction as an emotional crutch to get you through the day.  It is important to seek help either from your doctor or a counsellor or psychologist if you do feel that your low self-esteem is causing these types of difficulties.

Another reason that people suffer from poor self-esteem is that they have been teased or ridiculed about a particular aspect of their appearance or personality.  Weight issues and speech problems are common causes of low self-esteem, just as some people are over-conscious of their teeth, the fact that they wear glasses, or that they have a skin condition.  Of course, any bullying or teasing that does occur can be brushed off if the person is confident in themselves, but many of us will be hurt by such unwelcome abuse and may begin to dwell upon our 'failings'.  This is where poor self-esteem starts to creep in.
